Car Rental Gothenburg

In 1621, King Gustavus Adolphus founded Gothenburg, in the southwest of Sweden. More and more tourists are visiting the city, not least because Gothenburg's nightlife has acquired a reputation in recent years and you can find numerous excellent restaurants. The city also houses interesting museums and it forms the gateway to Sweden's western archipelago.

The heart of the city is formed by the Kungsportsavenym (usually referred to shortly as Avenyn). The place is teeming with restaurants, cafés, bars and nightclubs, including some jazz clubs. During the day, the nearby museums form the attraction. The Göteborgs Konstmuseum (Art Museum) is housed in a Neoclassical building on the Götaplatsen Square. This museum contains an extensive collection of Scandinavian art from the end of the 19th century, including works by Edvard Munch, Anders Zorn, P.S. Krøye and Carl Larsson. The same building houses the Hasselblad Center for Photographic Art.

Scandinavian countries are known for their design and applied arts. No wonder Gothenburg has a museum dedicated to it, the Röhsska Museum. Here you can see the development of design, from the mid nineteenth century to the present day. In addition to a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions are held on a regular basis. You can find the museum on the Vasagatan, again close to the Avenyn.

The Museum of World Culture (Världskulturmuseet) is a new asset for Gothenburg. Just the modern architecture of the building alone is worth a visit. Inside several world cultures are discussed by means of colorful exhibitions. These days almost every decent-sized city has a science and technology museum and Gothenburg is no exception. The gigantic Universeum Science Discovery Center is housed in what has been declared Sweden's most beautiful modern building. Besides all kind of experiments, the museum has simulated a tropical rainforest. It also contains an aquarium including for example stingrays and whales.

Not far from here lies Liseberg, northern Europe's largest amusement park with various attractions, from calm to terrifying. The 'Canon' attraction could not be clearer. You are indeed launched like a cannonball. The wooden rollercoaster 'Balder' is the park's main attraction. It has been declared the best wooden rollercoaster in the world many times.

In and around Gothenburg

East of Gothenburg lies a rough piece of nature, Delsjö. It consists of two lakes (large and small) that are interconnected and surrounded by rocky cliffs and forests. The Botanical Gardens lie south of the city. They contain over 20,000 species of plants, flowers and trees on a 175-hectare plot of land.

West of the city lies the western Swedish archipelago with rocky islets and bare skerries. It can be easily reached from the city by boat. A trip to the Älvsborgs fästning fortress that was constructed in the seventeenth century as a defense against the Danes, is a popular excursion. The church' tower stands out in the center of the fortress. In summer months, tours are organized during which actors take on the roles of 17^th century priests and prison guards in the fortress' dungeons. From Gothenburg, the fortress can be reached in 30 minutes by boat and just the boat trip through the archipelago alone is already an experience.

Parking

We recommend parking your rental car in one of the many parking garages in and around Gothenburg's center. Electronic signage indicates how to get to a garage that has availability.

Airport

Göteborg-Landvetter Airport – 20 kilometers east of the center – is the city's main airport. You can easily reach the airport by rental car: From the center first take the E20 (Kungsbäckaleden) and then the exit towards highway 40 (Boråsleden). The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.

The smaller Göteborg City Airport is located closer to the city (just over nine kilometers north of the center), but is only used by low-cost airlines. This airport can be reached via freeway E6.
